Course Overview DATES THURSDAY 13TH JULY AND 10TH AUG 2026 SAT 15TH JULY AND 12TH AUG 2006 ONLY OPEN TO PRESENT STUDENTS This immersive two-day workshop is designed for both beginners and experienced potters who want to explore the exciting, fast-paced, and beautifully unpredictable world of Raku ceramics. You’ll create your own pieces, experiment with a variety of surface techniques, and experience the thrill of outdoor Raku firing — complete with flames, smoke, glowing red-hot pots, and dramatic one-of-a-kind results. Throughout the course, students will explore: • Glazed Raku • Naked Raku • Horsehair Raku By the end of the workshop, you will leave with: • Up to five finished Raku pieces • A pot of slip polish to continue burnishing your work at home • The option to continue using Raku clay in regular studio sessions ________________________________________ DAY 1 --- MAKING & PREPARATION 10am – 4pm Welcome & Introduction We begin with an introduction to the Raku process Making Session Students will create up to five pieces (maximum size: 15cm wide × 20cm high) Raku clay will also become available for use in future regular studio lessons following your introduction. Technique Demonstrations Demonstrations throughout the day include: • Preparing surfaces for glaze, smoke, and carbon marking effects • Burnishing techniques for naked Raku • Surface preparation for different firing outcomes 🗓 DAY 2 — GLAZING & OUTDOOR FIRING 10am – approximately 4pm Students should bring up to five bisque-fired pieces. ________________________________________ Glazing & Surface Preparation for, Glazed Raku, Naked Raku and Horsehair Live Firing Demonstration Finishing & Review ________________________________________ 📏 Clay & Bisque Firing Guidelines To ensure fair kiln space for everyone, please follow these limits: • Maximum of 5 pots per person
Cancellation Policy
Bookings for regular classes may be cancelled up to 4 weeks prior to the first scheduled session. After this time a refund of payment minus a £15 admin fee can only be made if the space is filled by another participant so please give us as much notice as possible. Absences can not be made up but we may be able to provide access to the studio for equivalent UNTAUGHT time. Firing & Material Costs Class fees do not include firing costs. These are payable upon collection of your finished work. Work Collection & Storage Completed work will be stored for up to 3 months. After this period, uncollected items will be considered unwanted and disposed of. If you're planning to return for glazing or have any concerns about storing your work, please get in touch so we can make arrangements. Studio Conduct & Safety Classes are suitable for ages 16 and up unless otherwise specified. All participants are expected to help maintain a safe and welcoming studio environment. Please be mindful of others, share space respectfully, and follow any safety instructions provided during your session. If you have any accessibility needs or special requirements, let us know in advance so we can accommodate you.
